Maria Ricke

Maria grew up on a farm in Iowa, making art with whatever she could find. In 1999, she earned a BA in Peace Studies from the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University. Following college, she completed a year of AmeriCorps volunteer service in Chicago. She now calls Belle Plaine, Minnesota, her home and is grateful to live in a rural community once again. Maria has worked professionally with at-risk youth, in community based mental health services, adult daycare services, as a volunteer coordinator for a literacy tutoring program, and as a co-owner of a mosaic art store and community classroom. Her experiences in rural and urban settings have shown her the importance of individuals and groups having a way to tell their personal and collective stories. This telling, this sharing, is what unites and strengthens people. Making art is her way of remembering, exploring, and connecting with the world.
