Since 2015, approximately 10,000 Baby Boomers turn 65 every day, and this rate is projected to continue for the next 15+ years. This means that by 2030, one in five Americans will be 65 and older. The Office of Employment Projections at the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2015 and 2024, the average large company in the US will see between a 30-40% reduction in the general workforce simply due to retirements alone (2009). These impending projected retirements, coupled with the much smaller Gen Xers cohort, is set to create a significant number of leadership opportunities. The oldest Millennials turned 36 years old in 2018, and overall, Millennials will comprise 50% of the workforce by 2020. Since the bulk of the Millennial generation is early career or has yet to enter the work force, the potential exists for Millennials to fill management and leadership positions in the academic libraries. But who are the Millennials and what are their leadership perceptions and how do they compare to Gen X and Boomers? -- come find out!
